Job Purpose :  Managing the EU-funded project “Climate cHange and the future of coAstal CommuNities: transformation of soCiality, livElihoods and lifeStyle in the South Pacific (CHANCES-Pacific)

Position
Background

The Vanuatu National University (NUV) was established by Act No. 34 of 2019, with a mandate to “ensure the advancement of higher education and lifelong learning through academic and professional excellence through training, teaching and learning, in English and French, official languages, research and international cooperation”.

NUV is developing its research activity and strengthening its regional collaboration, as part of PIURN (Pacific Islands Universities Regional Network). The EU-funded CHANCES project falls under Call 3 “Living Labs for Innovative Solutions to address Climate Change Impact in the Pacific” of the RERIPA
(Strengthening Research and Innovation Ecosystems to address the Impact of Climate Change in the Pacific) project.

RERIPA is funded by the European Union and is a project collaboratively implemented by:

  • IRD – Research Institute for Development
  • PIDF – Pacific Islands Development Forum
  • Meteorological and Geo-Hazard Department Vanuatu
  • PIANGO – Pacific Islands Association of Non-Governmental Organizations

The objectives of the call 3 of RERIPA is to create Living Labs (LLs), i.e. multi- disciplinary regional public/private consortia able to address the Impact of Climate Change (CCI) in the Pacific Small Islands Developing States (SIDS), through innovative and sustainable user-centred solutions founded on
research-based evidence, with a focus on coastal vulnerability, lagoon and ocean health, and sea level rise.

NUV is part of the strong consortium composed of the University of the South Pacific (USP), Ministry of Education and Training, Government of Vanuatu (MOET), the Solomon Islands National University (SINU), the Institute Agronomique Néo-Calédonien (IAC), the University of New Caledonia (UNC),
the University of Sydney, and the EU funded project Family farming, lifestyle, and health in the South Pacific (FALAH).

The main objectives of the CHANCES-Pacific project are to understand the future of livelihoods and lifestyles of the communities in the Pacific affected by coastal vulnerabilities and sea-level rise with the help of digital technologies (Apps and digital medias) and to identify solutions with and for
communities involved in living labs that can improve livelihood and lifestyle, in Vanuatu, Solomon Islands and Fiji.
