Part-Time LANGUAGE TEACHING SPECIALIST

VANUATU INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY –  Port Vila, Efate

Job Description

A Language Teaching Specialist (LTS) at the VIT facilitates the development, implementation, and evaluation of organizational programming to improve language-instruction outcomes for students, and staff. Programming responsibilities include teaching courses, facilitating workshops, conducting 1-to-1 speaking and writing consultations, and developing educational resources.

This position is on a part time basis

The LTS supports VIT’s Innovation and Entrepreneurial Learning Institute strategies, and inclusion efforts through engaging language instruction and resource development for VIT students, and staff.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plan and teach language classes:
    o Prepare lesson plans.
    o Design and gather materials.
    o Structure activities.
    o Offer feedback on assignments.
    o Evaluate classes, student achievement, and progress.
    o Prepare reports for submission to the Director.
  • Maintain office hours for individualized meetings.
  • Coordinate designated area of programming in collaboration with other Language Teaching Specialists.
  • Develop educational resources for language students, and staff to engage in academic contexts and campus initiatives.
  • Hold 1-to-1 speaking and writing consultations:
    o Suggest consultation-session plans, materials, and activities.
    o Provide feedback for academic speaking, pronunciation, and academic writing.
    o Evaluate consultation-session achievement and progress.
    o Prepare and submit consultation-session reports.
  • Maintain professional activity.
  • Perform other duties as needed by the management
  • English proficiency of IELTS Level 7 or French Equivalent

Qualifications

  • A Master’s degree in a related field is necessary.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching a variety of English, French or other language for is necessary.
  • A background in graduate student and faculty professional development is preferred.
  • The ability to develop educational resources – including digital resources is preferred.
  • Knowledge of language-assessment procedures is necessary
  • Superior language proficiency is necessary.
  • Knowledge of the scholarly literature on teaching and learning in Applied Linguistics in higher education is necessary.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and administrative skills, including ability to work cooperatively with campus colleagues as well as with culturally and linguistically diverse students, and staff is necessary.
  • Familiarity with the academic mission of a research university is necessary.
