Full-Time LABORATORY TECHNICIAN
Job Description
Under the supervision of the Head of Lab, the Lab Technician is required to comply with quality and safety guidelines and the promotion of best-practice to ensure our products are of the highest quality. The laboratory technician is in charge of the fermentation monitoring.
Duties / Responsibilities:
- Collect, prepare and test samples.
- Record and analyse data.
- Maintain, calibrate and clean the equipment.
- Present results to the superior(s).
- Coordinate with the Head of Lab and our field staff to ensure measurement of sugar in the sugarcane fields for proper coordination of the cutting and crushing season.
- Coordinate with the sugarcane team on sugarcane deliveries.
- Assist the sugarcane team in sugarcane crushing.
- Ensure the sugarcane delivered meets The Distillery Company quality standards.
- Stay informed and up-to-date on all new and evolving procedures.
- Share and report incidents to improve the procedures.
- Inspect equipment, structures and material to identify the cause of errors or other problems or defects.
- Ensure procedures are in place and updated regularly.
- Ensure compliance with Food Safety Systems, Good Manufacturing Practices, and Standard Operating Procedures.
- Execute daily SOPs.
QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
- Education – A degree in biology or chemistry.
- Experience – Strong Analytical skills. No experience required but eagerness to learn and develop new skills
Language Skills – Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Good written and verbal communication skills. Must speak English and Bislama or French. Bilingual is a minimum and Trilingual is a strong advantage. - Mathematical Skills – Basic skills such as the ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide.
- Reasoning Ability – Ability to show initiative, problem solve and make independent decisions. Organized, diligent and meticulous. Open and honest.
- Computer Literate – Can type and answer emails in a professional way. Use Excel to subtract, multiply and divide. Fill forms and enter data on a computer.
- Physical Demands – The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands and fingers, handle, reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee is required to stand; walk; or stoop.

- Knowledge – Good knowledge in science, specifically in Chemistry and Biology. It is preferred that the successful candidate should have some knowledge of the distilling process.

ADDITIONAL NOTES
Knowledge in manufacturing or in the food industry is a plus but not essential.
