OXFAM IN THE PACIFIC HAS CHANGED
Oxfam in the Pacific (OiP), part of Oxfam International has been in the process of transitioning into a new programming and operating model that recognises Oxfam’s global commitment to transferring decision making and leadership to the global south.
Increasingly, OiP has been operating as a peer alongside Oxfam Australia and Oxfam New Zealand, setting our regional strategy and initiating new programmes and responses. We are moving away from the traditional ‘branch office’ approach, and this too is a signal of the changing model and transfer of power for Oxfam. The new model embraces the strong notion of Pacific regionalism that is being embedded into our new ways of working.
This change is also reflected in our Pacific’s Regional Strategy and is focussed on achieving change in three thematic areas: Climate Justice, Economic Justice and Gender & Citizen Justice. To do this, we currently work primarily with national and regional NGOs and Community Based Organisations but also with national and sub-national levels of government and regional institutions. We’re working directly or through partners in Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Fiji, Tuvalu, Kiribati, Palau, the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), and Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI), Tonga and Samoa.
Our work is guided by Oxfam’s global values and by Pacific values and culture including: openness, flexibility, respect, equity, justice, solidarity, collaboration, sharing and humility. We also value local ownership and leadership of change processes. Oxfam has embarked on a journey of self-reflection, focussing on its culture with safeguarding being one of the key areas that the Pacific Team and Program will integrate into its ways of working to model behavioural change. The Pacific Regional Strategy speaks to the programmatic and operational direction for the new look Pacific Region given the changes.
