The Gender Officer is responsible to support the Team Leader to implement the day-to-day field based gender activities. This includes implementing gender project activities with communities, and monitoring the progress of these activities.

CARE in Vanuatu is looking for a Gender Officer to be based in our Pentecost office.

Your major responsibilities will be varied and will include:

  • Support the Team Leader to ensure the effective and efficient implementation of the gender activities according to the activity plan and budget, including preparation of detailed budget requests for each field trip and activities;
  • Participate in regular coordinator meetings / forum within CARE to ensure that the work of all teams in integrated and mutually reinforcing;
  • Support and assist with planning consultations, planning and workshops in communities;
  • Support the Team Leader to complete a mapping of, and consultation with, all women’s groups in targeted communities in South Pentecost;
  • Participate in sensitisation and consultation sessions with community leaders;
  • Support Team Leader in preparing Training of Trainers (TOT) and workshop facilitation materials;
  • Organize and deliver workshops and trainings within communities;
  • Ensure good relationships with communities and local authorities;
  • Request and clear all field cash advances in a timely fashion in accordance with CARE Finance policies and procedures;
  • Ensure good communication, coordination and information sharing with and between all CARE staff;
  • Participate in coordination mechanisms as per requested by the Team Leader
  • Plan and be responsible for weekly reporting of field activities and notetaking as delegated;

Required qualifications and skills:

  • Minimum technical diploma and/or vocational training in community development and/or gender and/or minimum 2-3 years relevant work experience, preferably in community development projects and/or activity implementation with an International Non-Government Organisation (INGO);
  • Good understanding of women’s leadership, and gender equality programming;
  • Excellent communication and facilitation skills in Bislama and good communication skills in English;
  • Ability to analyse intricate information and produce concise and accurate reports;
  • Demonstrated high level organisational and time management skills, including the ability to plan and manage workflows and balance competing priorities to ensure timely processing to meet deadlines in a complex environment;
  • Demonstrated ability to take direction and to work as part of a team;
  • Demonstrated experience in following standard policies, procedures and processes;
  • A willingness to learn about CARE, gender equality and women’s empowerment activities;
  • Proven ability in managing a budget and/or cash; and
  • Good in Microsoft Office with knowledge in Microsoft Word and Excel. Capacity to use Kobo Toolbox for date collection and analysis is an asset.
