Communications Officer

CARE is an international development and humanitarian aid organisation fighting global poverty, with a special focus on working with women and girls to bring lasting change to their communities. As a non- religious and non-political organisation, CARE works with communities to help overcome poverty by supporting development efforts and providing emergency assistance. CARE International in Vanuatu has a focus in Gender Equality, Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), Inclusive
Governance and Emergency Response and Recovery.

CARE is looking to hire an individual on a short term contract with experience in developing stories and communication materials to share CARE’s work with different audiences.

This position is based in Port Vila.

The major responsibilities will be varied and will include:

  • Collecting story content including interviews, photos, videos and other materials
  • Collect consent from all stories (written, photo, video or other) subjects
  • Produce written or visual stories to be used in communication materials and products
  • Identify and articulate key organisation and program messages for CARE’s target audiences, including donors, stakeholders, communities and the general public

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Minimum diploma and/or vocational training in journalism, communications or a related field, and/or minimum 2 – 3 years relevant work experience
  • Professional communication skills in Bislama and strong communication skills in English, including an ability to write press releases, human interest stories and communications materials appropriate for an NGO stakeholder audiences
  • Ability to develop creative communication products, tools and approaches
  • Good awareness of the media industry and ability to cultivate relationships with media outlets and representatives as well as other stakeholders
  • Awareness and sensitivity to the particular issues facing vulnerable and marginalised people in Vanuatu and the development landscape in Vanuatu
  • Good interpersonal skills, including the ability to take direction and to work as part of a team
  • Good organisational and time management skills, including the ability to plan your own work to meet deadlines
  • A willingness to learn about CARE, gender equality and women’s empowerment activities
  • Good skills in Microsoft Office with knowledge in Microsoft Word, Publisher and Excel.

  • Relevant work experience with an International Non-Government Organisation (INGO)
  • Experience in communicating via new and social media platforms
  • Demonstrated skills in photography, videography and/or graphic design.
