Job Description
The Assistant Distiller will work closely with the Head Distiller to support all aspects of the distillation process. This hands-on role involves overseeing various stages of production, maintaining equipment, ensuring quality control, and contributing to the smooth running of the distillery. It’s a physically active role that requires problem-solving, attention to detail, and a passion for distillation.
The position may require long hours and flexibility, including work outside regular business hours, to meet production goals.
Key Responsibilities
- Daily Distillery Operations: Assist with day-to-day distillery functions, including fermentation, distillation, bottling, labeling, packaging, and preparing production materials. Operate equipment such as boilers, chillers, pumps, and steam generators, ensuring all processes run smoothly.
- Distillation & Fermentation: Execute and regulate distillations as per production plans, monitor fermentation batches, and operate the necessary machinery for the entire production cycle.
- Production Support: Assist with weighing, filling, labeling, and storing barrels, as well as loading and unloading materials and products. Ensure all equipment is properly maintained and ready for use.
- Process Documentation: Maintain accurate records of all production activities. Assist with data entry in the distillery’s production software, ensuring every step of the process is logged for future reference.
- Safety & Compliance: Adhere to all health, safety, and alcohol production regulations. Ensure that safety protocols are followed at all times to maintain a safe working environment in a potentially hazardous industry.
- Hygiene & Sanitation: Maintain high standards of hygiene and food safety. Coordinate with the distillery cleaner to ensure all equipment is cleaned and sanitized after use, and all workspaces are kept tidy and safe.
Physical Requirements
This role requires physical activity as part of the distillation process, including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and repetitive motions. You must be able to sit or stand for extended periods and handle heavy materials.
Qualifications
- Previous experience in distillation, brewing, or a related field is preferred, but not required.
- Ability to work with heavy machinery and willingness to learn distillation processes.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to work in a physically demanding environment.
- Basic computer skills for data entry.
- Understanding of hygiene, food safety standards, and safety protocols.
- Flexibility to work long hours, weekends, and occasionally outside regular business hours.
