Job Description
Scope of Work
The assignment will focus on the food security component under Output 1 of the project particularly the provision of trainings for plant pest and disease control to sustain the vertical gardening. A Plant Pest and Disease Specialist will be engaged to design and implement trainings on plant pest and disease control to relevant DARD staff who will eventually train the project beneficiaries.
Detailed Tasks and/or Expected Output
Working under the Director of DARD and with Agriculture Specialist and PST consultants, the Plant Pest and Disease Control Specialist will undertake the following:
(i) Designs and deliver 4 half-days of remote training on organic approaches to plant pest and disease control.
(ii) Ensures that approaches are appropriate for tropical, remote island setting, i.e., not dependent on highly specialized equipment or chemical products.
(iii) Develops and share printable training materials including review of existing DARD manuals and propose improvements which could be undertaken.
(iv) Ensures proper coordination with DARD and selection of relevant staff.
The consultant will report to DARD Director and work closely with the Agriculture Specialist/Program Coordinator consultant in coordinating and planning for the trainings with relevant DARD staff. The consultant will provide the trainings remotely given the potential lack of travel to Vanuatu and will use the most effective approach to maximize the learning opportunities for the participants of online trainings. In-country travel though will be explored during implementation depending on the opening of travels to Vanuatu.
The consultant will be engaged intermittently for 2 person-months. The estimated commencement of the assignment is in March/April 2022.
Minimum Qualification Requirements
Minimum 5 years of work experience in related field work, i.e., plant pest and disease control and agriculture. Experience in the design and delivery of Training of Trainers workshops. Must have good English writing and communication skills. Must have access to high-internet speed. Specialist based in Vanuatu will be highly preferred.
